Abiwin Co-op

Our name comes from the Algonquin word Abiwin, meaning “dwelling.”

This is more than just a label—it is a reflection of our core belief that housing should be more than a physical unit; it should be a place of true belonging, safety, and community.

Mission Statement

Abiwin is a not-for-profit housing co-operative that provides safe and affordable housing to a diverse membership, while advancing co-operative principles and contributing to the well-being of the broader community.

Land Acknowledgement

“Abiwin acknowledges that the land on which we live and gather is the traditional, unceded territory of the Anishinaabe Algonquin Nation, whose stewardship of this land continues to this day.”

Abiwin was founded by members of Ottawa’s LGBTQ2S+ community to create safe and secure housing at a time when such spaces were scarce. That spirit of care, inclusion, and community responsibility continues to guide us today.

Co-operative Values

Abiwin operates according to internationally recognized co-operative principles that guide how we live and work together:

Open & Voluntary Membership
Accessible to all persons able to use services and willing to accept responsibilities.
Democratic Member Control
One member, one vote. Members actively participate in setting policies.
Economic Participation
Members contribute equitably to, and democratically control, the capital of their co-op.
Autonomy & Independence
Co-operatives are self-help organizations controlled by their members.
Education & Training
We provide education for members and representatives to contribute to development.
Co-operation among Co-ops
Strengthening the movement by working together through local and national structures.
Concern for Community
Working for the sustainable development of our communities through policies approved by members.

These principles shape not only how decisions are made, but how relationships are built within the co-op.

Who We Are

Gays of Ottawa rally in 1979

Abiwin Housing Co-operative is a non-profit, member-run housing community located in Centretown, Ottawa. Our name comes from the Algonquin word Abiwin, meaning “dwelling” — a reflection of our belief that housing should be more than a unit; it should be a place of belonging.

Founded in 1983, Abiwin was created by members of Ottawa’s LGBTQ2S+ community in response to a critical need for safe, secure, and affordable housing at a time when discrimination and exclusion were widespread. From the beginning, Abiwin was envisioned as a place where people could live with dignity, stability, and mutual respect.

Today, Abiwin continues to uphold that founding spirit while welcoming a diverse membership that includes individuals, families, seniors, people living with disabilities, and people with a wide range of incomes and lived experiences.

Our Roots: Founded in 1983, Abiwin was created by members of Ottawa’s LGBTQ2S+ community to provide a sanctuary of dignity and mutual respect at a time when safe spaces were scarce.

Our Homes and Community

Abiwin is made up of 90 housing units, ranging from one- to four-bedroom homes, including wheelchair-accessible units. Our community spans four heritage buildings, several infill apartment buildings, and a mid-rise residential building — all located within walking distance of groceries, recreation centres, transit, and Ottawa’s downtown core.

We take pride in being stewards of Centretown’s architectural heritage, while ensuring our homes remain functional, safe, and accessible for current and future members.

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

Abiwin is committed to fostering a community that is free from discrimination and harassment and grounded in mutual respect.

Our membership includes people of different ages, abilities, genders, sexual orientations, household types, and cultural backgrounds. We strive to ensure that everyone who lives at Abiwin can feel safe, respected, and supported, and we actively work to remove barriers to participation whenever possible.

Community-Oriented Living

Living at Abiwin means participating in a shared community. Members are encouraged to take part in meetings, committees, and community activities that support both the day-to-day functioning of the co-op and the social fabric that makes it thrive.

We prioritize collaboration, conflict resolution rooted in dignity and respect, and open communication — recognizing that a strong community depends on shared responsibility and care.

Governance and Good Stewardship

Abiwin is governed by an elected Board of Directors, supported by committees and staff who oversee the day-to-day operations of the co-op. Members play an active role in shaping policies, approving budgets, and guiding the long-term direction of the community.

We are committed to:

  • Responsible financial management
  • Maintaining and improving our housing stock
  • Transparent decision-making
  • Long-term sustainability for future generations

Part of a Larger Co-operative Movement

Abiwin is an active participant in the Canadian co-operative housing sector and maintains memberships with organizations that support and strengthen co-operative housing locally and nationally. Through these connections, we contribute to — and benefit from — a broader movement dedicated to affordable, community-based housing.
